Events conducted
by our line and program offices are one of the most important parts of
our 30th anniversary celebration. I urge you to take advantage of our
anniversary to reach out to your community by hosting an open house at
your facility, provide tours for schools in your area, or visit a local
school during career day. In an agency as diverse as NOAA, there are numerous
opportunities for you to be involved.
Our anniversary
continues to be celebrated at NOAA facilities across the nation with
a wide variety of activities. The NOAA Library is hosting a series of
brown bag lunches at its offices in SSMC3 in Silver Spring, MD. In March
our South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve started its monthly
lectures. On April 1, 2000, over 30 NOAA employees volunteered to take
part in a marsh restoration project at Fort McHenry near Baltimore.
NESDIS coordinated activities on April 5th for the 40th anniversary
of the launch of TIROS, the world's first weather satellite. On April
20th Deputy Secretary Mallett joined the National Marine Fisheries Service
in hosting a dedication of the modernized fisheries laboratory in Galveston,
TX. Plus, in recognition of the 30th Anniversary of Earthday, we participated
in many different events across the country.
This anniversary
is a time to celebrate our past accomplishments and future endeavors.
With that in mind I am pleased to announce the creation of the NOAA
STEWARDS Program, a new project that will recognize NOAA employees who
participate in community based activities. NOAA Stewards are employees
who volunteer in their community to increase awareness about the agency.
Every employee interested in participating can register as a NOAA Steward
with NOAA's Office of Public and Constituent Affairs. Please contact
Robert Hansen by email at Robert.C.Hansen@hdq.noaa.gov
and he will forward registration information to you. We will record
the activities of all NOAA Stewards and recognize those volunteers at
the end of the year.
We've also put
together a handy reference guide for anyone hosting an event at one
of our facilities. You'll find the toolkit in the special events section
of the anniversary site. In this toolkit you'll find everything from
how to plan your event to ordering NOAA information from our central
warehouse facility in Kansas City, MO. So get involved, let your community
know what NOAA does and why your operation and what you do is so important.
We've got an exciting story to tell and who better to tell that story
than the people who make it a reality. Don't forget to let us know about
your activities. Send photos of your events along with a brief description
to Ramona Schreiber at Ramona.Schreiber@hdq.noaa.gov
