As music from the 1970's blared through the lobby at NOAA's David Skaggs Research Center in Boulder, employees streamed into the lobby to celebrate NOAA's 30th with coffee, cake and a few remarks from Deputy Under Secretary Scott Gudes. Gudes said he was particularly impressed with the enthusiasm and turn-out in Boulder and seemed to enjoy himself immensely. "The soul of our work is done in the field, in places like Boulder," he said. He also stated that while sometimes employees get overlooked, they are one of NOAA's most valuable assets and he wanted to honor the employees for their hard work and dedication. "Whether you've worked here for 30 days or 30 years, you're part of the NOAA family and its accomplishments," he said. In particular he mentioned John Chin, of the Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Lab, stationed in Hawaii, who for 40 years, has twice each week made the 100 mile round trip drive up to the Mauna Loa Observatory. He also mentioned the dedicated people at the research facilities and observatories who live in remote places for long periods of time, as well as the many others who work in NOAA's research laboratories, Mountain Administrative Support Center, weather service and Data Center in Boulder. "I wish I could read off each and every person's name," he said, "but I'm sure you wouldn't want to stand here that long."
