30 Things To Know

Make a selection:

National Marine Fisheries Service

Your Tuna are Dolphin-Safe: Through international cooperation tuna caught in the eastern tropical pacific are now dolphin-safe, ensuring the health of dolphins.

California Gray Whales are off the Endangered Species List: Previously hunted to near extinction, the California Gray Whale has become the first marine mammal taken off the endangered species list.

Sea Turtles Can Escape Shrimp Nets: Devices to allow endangered sea turtles to escape safely from shrimping nets in the Southeast have been developed and are being continually improved.

You can go Recreational Fishing: The Fisheries Service promotes recreational fishing through cooperative programs with youth groups and service groups for the disadvantaged. Working with the recreational fisheries community, Fisheries Service provides aquatic resource conservation education and information on the conservation and management of marine fisheries.

Will You Get to Fish for Anadromous Fish? Anadromous fish, such as salmon, that are born in fresh water and swim to the open ocean for most of their life, have been endangered by destruction of their habitat by many activities of man. The Fisheries Service supports research and management efforts in states on both coasts to help these fish recover their stock.
