Name: Martin Rose
Chief Marine Engineer Martin Rose, dubbed "the poster child for a successful NOAA career at sea" by Marine Operations Center Director RADM Nicholas Prahl, has been recognized by NOAA for 35 years of service and presented with a 35-year service pin and plaque. Indeed, Martin Rose has climbed the ladder of success more than once since joining the NOAA team in 1965 as a seaman apprentice aboard WHITING. Martin spent only one year as seaman apprentice before transferring to Hydrographic Field Party 746 with combined duties of surveyor, engineer and coxswain. Returning to WHITING later that year as an able bodied seaman, Martin was swiftly promoted to seaman surveyor (1967) and then to boatswain group leader (1968-1971). In 1971, he was promoted to chief boatswain, serving on RUDE, HECK, and GEORGE B. KELEZ, and finally returning to WHITING in 1981. In 1990, Rose decided that it was time for a career change and transferred to WHITING's Engine Department as a junior engineer. Over the next four years, he worked his way up to chief engineer, a position he has held aboard WHITING since 1994. Additional recognition CME Rose has received during his career with NOAA includes being named the 1981 "AMC Employee of the Year" and receiving a Bronze Medal for extended outstanding service in 1988.
